During rush hours, you will rarely see Alabang in a smooth road traffic flow; rare as a quick approval to trim down the jeepney fare whenever oil prices shrink. Though it should only take about 45 minutes to reach the place from where I live, it feels like forever (yes, there’s forever!) when you’re trapped in that road nightmare called ‘traffic.’
And when you say ‘traffic’ at its finest (or worst, whatever you want to call it), seasoned commuters like me can nod on these “adventures” they have most likely experienced themselves: jeep mates leaning on your shoulder or face or their sweat rubbing against your armpit, because Manong Dispatcher yelled that the jeep’s capacity is 12 when in reality, it’s only 10), and those “paabot-po-ng-bayad” struggles.
Despite all these things, I will always be thankful to be working in Filinvest City, Alabang. Here are the top 4 reasons why I love the location of my job:
1. Less hours in heavy traffic
If you are from the south, specifically Cavite or Laguna, Alabang can be the nearest business district for you. Yes heavy traffic is everywhere, but the accessibility of this place will cut down the number of wasted hours that you may possibly have.
Consider the amount of time that should have been spent resting after a day’s work. In a “Business Mirror” article, Felino A. Palafox Jr., founder of the Philippine chapter of The International Real Estate Federation, was quoted saying that on the average, Metro Manila residents spend 1,000 hours on congested roads every year. What a huge waste of time!
Also, a GMA News Online report cited a CNN Report on a Washington University in St. Louis study that confirmed that long commutes are connected with “higher weight, lower fitness levels, and higher blood pressure—all strong predictors of heart disease, diabetes, and some types of cancer.” Getting stuck in traffic also means long exposure to air pollution, which is bad for our health.
2. Festival Mall is just a walk away
My colleagues and I are fond of having a lunch out in the food court as a form of office bonding. Whether we have our own baon or not, we can easily head on to the mall and buy some ice cream or chocolate dessert. Since we also love noodles, chicken, and pizza, you guess it right, during pay day; we enjoy our blessings in the stores that have these favorites of ours.
In some cases where we urgently need to buy some office stuff, the mall is a quick relief. And since we’re dominantly female in our company, the mall strongly supports our inner shopper instinct.
Yes, it’s fun to be working in a place near the mall. But it’s also a constant reminder of keeping a good management of our personal finances.
3. Quick access to other key locations in the metro
Filinvest City in Alabang is very much accessible, like a few minute-drive or -commute, to Ninoy Aquino International Airport; Makati; Bonifacio Global City; and Nuvali in Sta. Rosa, Laguna. It is, indeed, at the heart of the metro.
4. Special national events/activities don’t distract my route
Who was not annoyed by the heavy traffic caused by the re-routing of public vehicles during the 2015 APEC Summit? How many commuters are being affected every time a large assembly of protesters is gathered in front of foreign embassies and government offices?
Since Alabang is far from the favorite venues of events like those, my route to work and back home is rarely disturbed. While I can share with the frustration of those people directly affected by those circumstances, I’m thankful I don’t have to go through those “road nightmares.”
Surely, there’s a lot more things worth mentioning further. For now though, I will be as joyful as I am that God has placed me exactly where I need to be.
