Pque holds tree planting to commemorate Earth Day

In celebration of Earth Day, the Parañaque City Government under the leadership of Mayor Florencio Bernabe, Jr. had a tree-planting activity on Monday. The activity was held at the city’s greenhouse at the Fourth Estate Subd. in Brgy. San Antonio, this city.

The tree-planting was organized by the City Urban Gardening Technical Working Group together with the Dept. of Environment and Natural Resources, Dept. of Agriculture and the Office of Parañaque 2nd Dist Rep. Roilo Golez.

Apart from protecting the environment, the project also aims to promote urban gardening as an additional means for food production.

Beneficiary families of DSWD’s 4Ps Program, local officials, city government employees and other residents planted fruit trees at the urban gardening site.  Meanwhile, bamboos were planted on creek sides to prevent soil erosion.

“Planting trees benefits people and the environment. For one, they help purify the air and provide shade from the harmful rays of the sun.  For another, they help prevent environmental degradation and global warming. Also, it gives us an opportunity to work together in a very productive way.”, Mayor Jun Bernabe said.

The mayor also encouraged residents to practice urban gardening for food security; and  garbage volume reduction through waste segregation and recycling to lower the cost of garbage management, likewise for environmental protection.

In 2006 Mayor Jun Bernabe won the Anvil Award for Excellence in Public Relations for Environmental Protection.
