Fortun’s wife shot in face in house in BF Almanza

MANILA (2nd UPDATE) — The wife of lawyer Raymond Fortun was shot in the face in Las Pinas on Thursday night, authorities said.

The incident took place outside the victim’s home, according to Senior Superintendent Adolfo Samala, Las Piñas police chief.

Fortun told radio dzMM that his wife, Carol, was shot in her right cheek at around 8 p.m., after she alighted from her vehicle.

The bullet went through Mrs. Fortun’s nape, the lawyer said.

She was immediately brought to the Perpetual Help Hospital. She is now in stable condition.

“Pinagpala naman na hindi naging malubha ang kanyang tama. Mukhang makaka-survive naman po siya. Pero kailangan parin po namin ng dasal,” he said.

Fortun said the suspects were riding a motorcycle.

“Basta ang alam ko po, ang asawa ko, santo ‘yan eh,” an emotional Fortun said, when asked about the possible motive for the shooting. “Wala hong mananakit sa kanya.”

“Kung meron po, ang target talaga ay ako. Ako po talaga ‘yung inaabangan nila. Hindi ‘yung misis ko. Walang mananakit sa kanya,” he said.

Fortun said the only reason he was not with his wife that night is because his flight from Iloilo, where he was doing a wedding coverage, was delayed.

“Under normal circumstances, dapat sabay kami magsimba tonight. It just so happened na meron akong wedding sa Iloilo yesterday, at ngayong hapon lang ako nakauwi,” he said. “I would have been so much earlier to hear mass with her, pero na-delay po yung flight namin from Iloilo. Nakarating ako sa Maynila almost 7 p. m., and nakauwi ako ng bahay just in time para makita ‘yung misis ko na nakabagsak na.”

While motives remain unclear, Fortun suspects the shooting is related to his job as a lawyer.

“Alam ko wala akong inaagrabyadong tao. Meron lang sigurong di natutuwa sa mga pinaggagawa ko sa korte at sa mga sinusulat ko sa Facebook. I feel that I am the target here,” he said.

Fortun said his wife is now safe and could be out of the hospital in 2 to 3 days.

He said the bullet missed major arteries and bones by a few millimeters.

The lawyer added that after the incident, he knows more than ever that God is truly watching over his family.

“Napatunayan ko po talaga na God always watching over her. Millimeters lang po ‘yung pinag-uusapan dito, tinamaan na sana yung carotid artery niya. She could have died. But God i watching over her,” he said.

After the incident, Fortun said he is still looking forward to a happy Christmas celebration with his family.

He said the incident made him realize how valuable his family is.

“Kung sino po ‘yung mga gumawa nito. Thank you po because, now more than ever, I know that God is watching over my family. Thank you po for making me realize how valuable my family is for me. At ‘yung pinaplano niyo po, sorry po, pero hindi natupad yung masamang binabalak niyo,” he said.

The Southern Police District is now reviewing a CCTV footage from the gate of BF Almanza that might have caught the suspects following the vehicle of Fortun’s wife on the way home.-with reports from Zandro Ochona, dzMM; Carolyn Bonquin, ABS-CBN News
