MMDA to set 60 kph speed limit at Macapagal Avenue

From GMANEWS.TV:

After putting in place a 60-kph speed limit along Commonwealth Avenue in Quezon City, the Metropolitan Manila Development Authority is planning a similar speed limit along Macapagal Avenue in Pasay City.

Metro Manila mayors and the MMDA have agreed on the matter, following pleas from concerned citizens for government to curb road accidents there — many of them supposedly due to drag racing.

“The emerging location for shopping centers and other establishments along Macapagal Ave. also multiplies the volume of vehicles that traverse in the said thoroughfare which results to the high rate of road accidents and tragic loss of lives, limbs and property, especially during night time when it is also being used by drag racers,” MMDA chairman Francis Tolentino said in an article posted on the MMDA website late last week.

Metro Manila mayors who compose the Metro Manila Council — the MMDA’s policy-making body — met on the matter and unanimously approved a resolution setting the 60-kph speed limit.

The speed limit covers all public and private vehicles, including motorcycles, traversing Diosdado Macapagal Avenue, the article said.

The resolution takes effect 15 days after publication in two newspapers of general circulation, it added.

According to Tolentino, it is high time the MMDA and local government units impose such a limit along Macapagal Avenue to minimize, if not eradicate, the high incidence of reckless and unlawful drag racing there.

“Now, how do you solve a headache of this magnitude, if left unattended, can put more lives in peril?” he asked. — RSJ, GMA News
