Las Piñas treatment facility faces raps in hazardous dumping

THE DEPARTMENT of Environment and Natural Resources (DENR) has ordered the filing of charges against the owner of a treatment facility and other individuals for dumping toxic waste in Cavite.

In a statement on Tuesday, DENR Secretary Ramon J.P. Paje said he has ordered the Environment Management Bureau to file the appropriate charges citing that the dumping of toxic waste is in violation of Republic Act No. 6969 or the Toxic Substances and Hazardous and Nuclear Wastes Control Act.

The DENR said that based on the investigation, the toxic materials came from Solchem, a treatment facility in Las Pinas City.

Initial investigation, the agency also said, showed that the toxic waste was dumped in barangays Langkaan I and II in Dasmarinas City.

The two villages are adjacent to a tributary of the Langkaan River.

“We will spare no one in this case. The government is definitely serious in enforcing environmental laws especially at this time when the country is facing several environmental hazards resulting from climate change,” Mr. Paje said. — Louella D. Desiderio
