Cop, carnapper killed in Muntinlupa

A MISENCOUNTER between local police and members of the Highway Patrol Group (HPG) who were conducting an anti-carnapping operation took the lives of one policeman, a suspected carnapper and seriously wounding five others Monday evening in Muntinlupa City.

Declared dead on arrival at the Ospital ng Muntinlupa was SPO1 Macario Romano of HPG who sustained gunshot wounds in the body while carnapping suspect Michael Maranan, alias “Jordan,” 33, of Fabian Compound, expired while undergoing treatment at the Alabang Medical Clinic.

Five others were wounded including SPO1 Aniceto Santiago of HPG who was hit by a bullet in his spinal column,  PO3 Mersan Rapirap of Muntinlupa Police Station and three bystanders identified as Aileen Duran, 30, Anna Loraine Maranan, 28, and 10-year old Grade V pupil Heart Macapagal, all residents of Fabian Compound, Alabang, Muntinlupa City. The wounded victims were all confined at the Ospital ng Muntinlupa except SPO1 Santiago who was transferred to the Orthopedic Hospital in Quezon City for having found to have slug in his spinal column.

Muntinlupa police chief Senior Supt. Roque Vega, in his report to Southern Police District (SPD) Director Chief Supt. Jose Erwin Villacorte, revealed that the incident transpired at Fabian Compound in Alabang around 9:30 p.m. wherein elements of HPG conducted an anti-carnapping operation against Maranan.

PO3 Rapirap, who is also residing in the said compound, while on his way home from his duty witnessed the exchanged of gunfire. Not knowing that the group of SPO1 Romano were also police officers, he responded when he saw the incident and have mistaken the two police officers as criminals.
