The Origins of Paranaque and Muntinlupa

Historians agree that both Paranaque and Muntinlupa have progressed from their early days of strife toward truly progressive and developed cities. Historically, both have seen their fair share of war and crime in the past. But, it is the resilience of its inhabitants, who have grown from these experiences and have helped both cities move toward a more peaceful, profitable, and forward-thinking existence. In Metro Manila, the cities are shining examples of how to change with the times, with a focus on education and business. Below, are the histories of each city, from inception up to the cities they have become today.

A Brief History of Paranaque

Paranaque has a long and storied history, having been founded in 1572. Close to the sea, its proximity to the water and nearby lands led to the Paranaquenos becoming trading partners with the Indonesian, Malay, Indian, and Chinese. In those times, the Paranaquenos had a variety of ways to make a living: Fishing, salt-making, planting rice, shoemaking, weaving, and much more (Manila Bulletin).

In 1574, during the Invasion of Limahong, residents helped to prevent an attack on Manila. In 1762, residents took up arms once again in order to repel the invading British forces (City of Paranaque). Citizens fought alongside troops throughout the years and focused their efforts on Japanese aggressors during World War II.

Since these skirmishes, the city of Paranaque has grown and flourished into a modern city full of shopping malls, restaurants, churches, manufacturing companies, hospitals, colleges, and condominiums. Tourists flock to see Komedya, Sunduan, and Sayaw ng Pagbati. What was once a city of strife and a poor economy has transformed into a city to behold, with true beauty, safety, and cleanliness, true facets of its growth and expansion into the city it is today.

A Brief History of Muntinlupa

In the early days of Muntinlupa history, its inhabitants were under the religious supervision of the Augustinians. It was finally in 1869 in which the formation of a true town was started thanks to approval by the Civil Government. It became a district of Morong, Rizal, in 1901 (Muntinlupa City).

After World War II, infrastructure projects were put in place within the town. During this time, the first municipal hall was constructed under then Mayor Francisco de Mesa. Residential housing, factories, and other businesses begin to see much new growth. Land was developed, roads were widened, and development projects were begun by the local government. In 1975, Muntinlupa became part of the Metro Manila area, which itself, had just been created.

Education and schools became a major priority of Muntinlupa in the subsequent years. The Loresca and Argana administration saw to it that schooling became an important part of the society and public schools began to sprout up in different communities. In 1995, the House Bill Number 14401 converted Muntinlupa from a municipality to a burgeoning and bustling city. The move was approved by the House of Representatives and Muntinlupa became a real charter city a little later on when president Fidel Ramos signed the Republic Act 7926 into legislation.
