Silver Games to be held in Paranaque

In line with its “Hataw sa Health” or “Healthy City” Advocacy, the Parañaque City Government under the leadership of Mayor Florencio Bernabe, Jr. will launch a novel and innovative sports event that will benefit the adult segment of the community.

This activity is the first of its kind and has never been staged before anywhere in the country.

Dubbed as the “Parañaque Silver Games”, the city will pave the way for promoting a healthy adult citizenry by initiating this unique combination of indoor and outdoor games under a one-event concept.

Inspired by the “Sports for All” concept of the International Olympic Committee, it seeks to promote sports across all age groups, demographics, physical capacities and abilities.

“In the past, all sports events catered to the youth sector. It is about time we come up with one where the parents and adults can participate in a set of healthy and wholesome activities designed to enhance their well-being, promote camaraderie, healthy competition and an active lifestyle.”, Mayor Bernabe said.

“With the Parañaque Silver Games”, we will be able to create not only a one-time sports event but an institutionalized annual sports development program for adults that will compliment the city’s sports program for the youth. Thus, the city will be the first to have this holistic, unbiased and progressive approach to sports development.”, the local chief executive added.

The sports events for the Parañaque Silver Games will include swimming, basketball, cycling, walkathon, dance sport, badminton, volleyball, billiards, darts and chess. Primary target participants are male and female residents of the city; 40 to 65 of age; household heads, parents, homeowners. Applicants must have a doctor’s clearance to participate in active sports.

The program is being mulled by the Florencio V. Bernabe, Sr. Memorial Foundation and the Parañaque City Government through its Youth and Sports Development Office, headed by Mr. Louie Perez and the Office of Councilor Benjo Bernabe. Lending their expertise to the program are Project Consultants Grace Venzuela and Rhett Daza.

Parañaque Silver Games is slated for April 2011.
