Pinay figure skater makes Philippines and Paranaque proud

Exhibiting grace, form and skill, Filipina figure skater Jem Aizen Guhit of the SMI International Ice Skating Rink registered good wins in the recently concluded 25th Annual Silver Anniversary ISI Team Competition at Sky Rink in Chelsea Piers, New York City USA.

Sky Rink is the largest Ice Skating Institute (ISI) endorsed competition on the US East coast. For the past 25 years, amateur figure skaters of all ages and skills levels from all over the world (with the possible exception of the Philippines) have tested their skills in this prestigious competition.

In this year’s edition, 16 champion teams vied for honors, among them Diamond City Skating Academy;  EJ Murray Arena; Fairfax Ice Arena;  Great Neck Arena;  Ice Chalet; IGFSU; Mennen Sports Arena; Montclair Inside Edge; Pickwick Arena; Sky Rink; SMI International Ice Skating Rink (where the Filipina belongs); Sport-O-Rama;  The Rinks; The Rinx; Union Sports Arena; and World Ice.

The first Filipino to be invited at Skyrink, Jem Aizen Guhit wowed the crowd and charmed the judges with her superb performance, dominating the Rhythmic Ribbon, Technical, Artistic, Light Entertainment & Spotlight FS3 events in the female 15 year old category, capturing 4 gold medals.

Prior to her debut participation at Sky Rink, she competed in other circuits bagging medal after medal, among them 2 gold, 1 silver in the 2010 ISI 30th Annual Skate World Recreational Team Championship, Marlboro, Mass. USA; 1 gold, 2 silver at the 2009 ISI Skate Hongkong; 2 gold, 1 silver at the SM Summer Skate 2009; 1 gold at the SM Skate Manila 2008; 3 gold, 1 bronze at the SM Summer Skate 2008; and 1 silver, 1 bronze at the Skate Asia 2007.

It will be recalled that the City Council enacted City Resolution No. 11-037 (049) Series of 2010, a local legislation recognizing the achievements of Jem Aizen Guhit in the sport of ice skating and awarding her with a plaque of appreciation and a financial incentive of forty thousand pesos. Early this year, the young Parañaqueña, on the recommendation of Councilor Benjo Bernabe and Youth and Sports Development Office Head, Louie Perez was hailed an Outstanding citizen of Parañaque during this year’s cityhood celebration rites.

“We are elated that finally, a Filipino, of the City of Parañaque was invited in the Sky Rink Competition and that she did well in her chosen events. Jem Aizen Guhit has certainly earned the respect, administration and goodwill of the competition organizers, participating champion teams and the individual competitors themselves. Her debut at Sky Rink should open avenues and pave the way for Filipino figure skaters to get more invitations in the different figure skating circuits”, Mayor Jun Bernabe said.
