MANILA, Philippines – The city government of Parañaque has intensified the relocation of illegal dwellers living along waterways and danger zones in preparation for the rainy season, Mayor Edwin Olivarez said yesterday.

He said some 2,000 families are now staying in Trece Martirez, Cavite.

“Residents in danger zones voluntarily dismantled their shanties and availed themselves of the relocation program of the city government,” Olivarez said.

The relocated residents were given P18,000 “displacement assistance” and moved to their new houses in Cavite, he said.

Olivarez said the resettlement site has electricity, water and access roads to nearby schools and markets.

“The beneficiaries of the relocation program will pay P200 monthly amortization for the new house,” he said.

He said the city government is also negotiating with owners of certain parcels of land in Parañaque for its in-city relocation program.

The city government has recently turned over 144 housing units to beneficiaries of the in-city relocation program.

“Those living before in danger zone areas can now enjoy their new surroundings and houses at C-5 Extension in Barangay La Huerta,” Olivarez said.

The mayor said they are still building a total of 660 housing units in various areas for illegal dwellers along major waterways.
