Paranaque releases P27M for 13th Month Pay

PARANAQUE City Mayor Edwin L. Olivarez on Monday announced the release within this month of the first tranche of the 13th month pay in a bid to help city hall employees defray their expected expenses relative to the coming opening of classes.

Mayor Olivarez made the announcement during the flag raising ceremonies in which he also took time to greet all mothers a happy mother’s day, before giving them fresh flowers in recognition of their valuable contribution to the success of their respective families as well as for the efficient work they are doing at the city hall.

He also handed flowers to his wife Janet who was present during the occasion.

City Treasurer Anthony L. Pulmano said a total of P27 million was released to be given to all casual and permanent employees who already rendered at least one month of service during the current calendar year.

The mayor’s announcement of the release of 13th month pay was met with jubilation by the employees who all thanked him for “understanding their situation and for always ensuring that the benefits due them are released on time”.

The 13th month pay is the mandatory additional income, which workers should receive from their employers whether private or government equivalent to one-twelfth of their basic salary in a calendar year.

Traditionally, government agencies release the first tranche in the middle of the year to help employees with their expenses that come during the enrollment period.

The law provides that employers may opt to release the 13th month pay before a particular calendar year is over.

Meanwhile, Mayor Olivarez also announced the significant increase in the number of enrolles at the Polytechnic University of the Philippines in Paranaque City- from around 450 in 2011 to 1,150 this year.

The increase came following their decision to institute a number of reforms especially the classification of courses that are being offered from two year diploma to full four year bachelor courses.

In line with his program of providing cheap but quality education to the students, Mayor Olivarez also helped lower the tuition fee from the previous P3,000 per semester to just P1,500 with the other half being subsidized by the city government.

The first batch of PUP graduates have already graduated last April even as Olivarez expects more enrollees this year especially since they have already started implementing their so called “education to employment program”.

Under this scheme, business owners in Paranaque are required to hire at least 40 percent of their employees from our local residents.

“With our aggressive programs to help our youth, I do not see any reason for students not to study” Mayor Olivarez stressed.
