Paranaque City expanded truck ban to start on Aug. 25

Parañaque City Mayor Edwin L. Olivarez today said the city will start implementing its expanded truck ban on Monday, August 25, to ease traffic congestion along major roads and mitigate the effects of a planned closure of the Sucat Interchange which is expected to exacerbate traffic in the area.

Mayor Olivarez said that they have met and consulted with members of the city’s truckers’ association to inform them of the expanded truck ban. The association members agreed to the plan, he said.

“We recognize the important role of truckers in our local economy because there are so many logistics and transport companies operating in Parañaque as a result of our proximity to the Ninoy Aquino International Airport,” the mayor said. “That is why we are implementing a selective truck ban to lessen the impact on our businessmen.”

Mayor Olivarez said the city has an existing truck ban by virtue of a city ordinance passed years ago but which is only being implemented on secondary roads.

Starting Monday, however, the truck ban will already cover the city’s major thoroughfares including Dr. A. Santos Avenue (Sucat Road), the East and West Service Roads of the South Luzon Expressway, Ninoy Aquino Avenue, Airport Road, and Quirino Avenue.

The ban will be in effect from 6 a.m. to 9 a.m. and from 4 p.m. to 8 p.m., with a window from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m., Mondays through Fridays. Those covered by the ban are 10-wheeler cargo trucks, trailer trucks, transit mixers, and those hauling sand and aggregates and other heavy payloads.

Six-wheeler trucks are exempted from the ban to allow logistics and cargo forwarding companies to move their cargoes to and from the airports and their warehouses anytime.

In addition to the expanded truck ban, Mayor Olivarez said all trucks passing through major roads will only be allowed to use the center lanes to avoid further traffic clogging. He said the center lane scheme will be implemented daily, including Saturdays and Sundays.
